ALGIERS: Algeria has announced its decision to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), citing the failure of all available avenues to maintain bilateral ties.
According to foreign media reports, the announcement was made on Algerian state television, which said that Algeria had taken the decision after what it described as the exhaustion of all means to preserve relations between the two countries.
The Algerian government has accused the UAE of interfering in Algeria’s domestic affairs as well as in broader regional matters. The accusations mark a significant deterioration in relations between Algiers and Abu Dhabi and could have wider implications for diplomatic relations in the Arab and North African regions.
As part of the decision, Algeria has reportedly given the UAE ambassador 48 hours to leave the country. The measure represents a major diplomatic escalation between the two states, which have maintained formal relations despite differences over several regional issues.
Relations between Algeria and the UAE have faced increasing tensions in recent years, with the two countries adopting different positions on a number of political and security matters across the Arab world and Africa.
Algerian officials have repeatedly emphasized the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. The Algerian leadership has also expressed concerns over the involvement of foreign powers in regional conflicts and political disputes.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has frequently criticized what he considers the UAE’s growing regional influence. In previous remarks, he referred to the Gulf state as a “microstate” and accused it of attempting to destabilize several countries in the region.
In a television interview earlier this year, Tebboune made particularly strong remarks about the UAE’s alleged regional role. Referring to the country without naming it directly in some portions of his comments, he said that wherever it became involved, bloodshed followed.
