The Establishment Division has rejected proposals to increase the upper age limit for appearing in the Central Superior Services (CSS) examination from 30 to 35 years and raise the number of attempts from three to five.
According to official documents, a subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat had recommended increasing the CSS age limit to 35 years, while the main standing committee had proposed allowing candidates five attempts instead of the existing three.
In its written response to the parliamentary committee, the Establishment Division termed the recommendations impractical and decided to retain the existing policy.
The division said any change in the age limit or number of attempts for the CSS examination falls within the policy domain of the federal government, while the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) is responsible for implementing the policy approved by the government.
The FPSC, during its 174th meeting, also decided to maintain the existing CSS policy.
The Establishment Division argued that raising the upper age limit could significantly increase the number of CSS candidates, placing additional pressure on the conduct of the examination, administrative arrangements, and the evaluation of answer scripts.
It also said that allowing more attempts could encourage some candidates to repeatedly sit the examination, potentially causing them to lose valuable productive years.
Moreover, candidates entering the civil service at a higher age could have a relatively shorter effective period of service.
The division further noted that increasing the age limit could affect the long-term availability of experienced officers for senior government positions.
Under the existing policy, the upper age limit for the CSS examination remains 30 years, while candidates are allowed a maximum of three attempts.
