Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday that the tragedy that took place at Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in which 14 newborns had died was only because of corruption.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Social Security Hospital in Sialkot, he said that corruption was rampant at the PIMS.

He further said that there were many hospitals in Rawalpindi which had not been registered.

He expressed the hope that now when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had taken notice of the incident, it would produce desired results.

The minister said that the objective of doctors as well as paramedics should be to serve humanity rather than minting money.

He said that facilities would be provided to cancer patients in Gujranwala in coming days. “There should be a burn unit in Sialkot,” Asif opined.

He said that work on development projects was underway in Punjab.

Coming back to the hospital, the minister said it had been specially built for factory workers. “There are millions of people who work at factories,” he said.

He claimed that the elimination of corruption was a priority for the government.

Asif claimed that the anti-corruption department in Punjab had worked in a very organized manner to get to corrupt elements.

He said he supported the steps being taken by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for the elimination of corruption from the province.
