The government and Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) negotiating committees will hold their next meeting on Monday, September 7, as the party has announced that its protests and sit-ins will continue across the country.
JI Secretary General Liaquat Baloch told the media that Inayatullah Khan, Firasat Ali Shah, Ziauddin Ansari, Nasrullah Randhawa and Naveed Ali Baig would be members of the party’s negotiating team.
Baloch also announced that the party would continue its sit-ins alongside negotiations with the government. He said protests, rallies and sit-ins would continue across the country.
Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami sit-in in Lahore has entered its 20th day. The protest has led to the closure of Mall Road between Faisal Chowk and Regal Chowk, causing major traffic problems in the area.
The road closure has created serious difficulties for residents, motorists and traders, with traffic affected along one of Lahore’s main routes.
The latest development follows a meeting held at Mansoora on Thursday between the government delegation and Jamaat-e-Islami leadership. The government team included Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah and Khawaja Saad Rafique.
After the meeting, JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman and members of the government delegation held a joint news conference. The JI chief said the party would continue its sit-ins while negotiations with the government also went ahead.
Naeem said the government delegation was ready to consider the party’s proposals aimed at providing relief to ordinary people. He said further discussions would take place with officials from the Finance Ministry, the Federal Board of Revenue and the Petroleum Ministry.
Ahsan Iqbal thanked the JI chief and his team for hearing the government’s position. He said the JI leadership had assured the delegation that it would not make any demand that could harm the national interest or create difficulties for the public.
Rana Sanaullah said the government was prepared to hold detailed discussions with the JI team through officials from the Federal Board of Revenue, the Finance Ministry and, in particular, the Petroleum Ministry.
He said the government would present the relevant details to the JI team and seek agreement on measures that could provide relief to consumers.
Naeem said the purpose of the party’s protest was to reduce inflation and provide relief to ordinary people. He said the campaign was not being driven by political or personal interests and that the party was not seeking an advantage in any election.
The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said about 90 to 95 percent of Pakistan’s population was struggling to meet basic needs, while more than 40 percent of people were living below the poverty line, citing government and international reports.
He also strongly criticised the petroleum levy, saying consumers were facing a heavy burden of taxes and levies on fuel. Naeem called for the petroleum levy to be abolished and fuel prices to be reduced.
