The Ministry of Religious Affairs has advised Pakistani pilgrims travelling to Iraq through Iran to use air routes following the closure of the Al-Shib border crossing, which has remained shut since October 21.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the Al-Shib border crossing between Iran and Iraq has been closed to all movement, leaving Pakistani pilgrims unable to travel to Iraq through the designated land route.
The spokesperson said the movement of passengers, vehicles and commercial goods through the border crossing would remain suspended until further notice.
Pakistani pilgrims currently in Iran have been advised to consider air travel to Iraq through Baghdad or Najaf international airports.
The ministry said no alternative land route was currently available for Pakistani pilgrims travelling from Iran to Iraq.
The spokesperson advised pilgrims to review the latest travel guidelines and confirm the status of their intended routes before making travel arrangements.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has also directed all registered Ziyarat Group Organisers (ZGOs) to immediately inform Pakistani pilgrims about the closure of the Al-Shib border.
Pilgrims have been advised to contact their respective group organisers to verify travel arrangements and obtain updated information before departure.
Earlier, the Ministry of Religious Affairs issued new travel guidelines for Pakistani pilgrims visiting Iran and Iraq, directing registered group organisers to verify flight connections and prepare contingency arrangements to deal with possible travel disruptions.
According to the ministry’s circular issued last week, pilgrims must confirm all stages of their air travel before departure to avoid difficulties during their journey.
The ministry directed organisers to verify connecting flights and arrange alternative travel facilities in case of flight cancellations or other unexpected disruptions.
The circular also instructed organisers to maintain sufficient funds and arrange alternative accommodation to assist pilgrims during emergencies.
Group organisers were further directed to brief pilgrims on the travel guidelines and ensure compliance with instructions concerning air travel between Iran and Iraq.
The ministry said the precautionary measures were intended to ensure the safety and convenience of Pakistani pilgrims and minimise difficulties caused by disruptions to international travel arrangements.
