FAISALABAD: The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has launched a comprehensive initiative to strengthen fire safety at government hospitals across Faisalabad, installing four fire hydrants at different locations of Allied Hospital-I.
The initiative comes in the wake of a devastating fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), which claimed the lives of 14 newborns, highlighting concerns over fire safety and emergency response systems at healthcare facilities.
WASA Managing Director Engineer Saqib Raza said the initiative was being implemented in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, under which a total of 20 fire hydrants would be installed at government hospitals across the city to enhance their emergency firefighting capabilities.
He said four fire hydrants had been installed at Allied Hospital-I, while the remaining 16 would be installed at other major government hospitals.
According to the plan, four fire hydrants will be installed at Allied Hospital-II (DHQ Hospital), two at Children’s Hospital, two at Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology (FIC), two at General Hospital Samanabad, two at General Hospital Ghulam Muhammad Abad and two at Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Hospital.

The remaining installations are scheduled to be completed by September 5, he said, adding that WASA teams were working to ensure the facilities become operational within the stipulated timeframe.
Raza said WASA was fully committed to protecting human lives during emergencies, particularly at hospitals where large numbers of patients, attendants and healthcare workers are present.
He said the installation of dedicated fire hydrants would strengthen hospitals’ ability to respond promptly to fire emergencies and provide an additional layer of protection for patients, attendants and medical staff.
“If the need for additional fire hydrants is identified at any hospital during the ongoing assessment, WASA will make arrangements to meet the requirement as well,” he said.
