The fifth death anniversary of prominent Kashmiri Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Geelani is being observed today.
Geelani remained one of the prominent voices advocating the right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir. During his political career, he faced prolonged detention and imprisonment and continued to speak against Indian policies in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of occupied Jammu and Kashmir in 1972, 1977 and 1987 and later became a prominent leader of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
For the final 11 years of his life, Geelani remained under house arrest at his residence in Hyderpora, Srinagar.
Syed Ali Geelani died on September 1, 2021, at the age of 91, while under house arrest. His death anniversary is being observed to remember his decades-long political struggle and his advocacy for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
