LAHORE: Former Pakistan cricketers have strongly criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over its recent decisions following the national team’s disappointing performances during the tour of England.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi described the decision to bring T20 players into the Test setup as surprising. He questioned the wisdom of making significant changes to the squad during an important Test assignment, suggesting that players selected for the longest format should ideally have the appropriate experience and preparation.
Former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur also voiced concerns over the PCB’s frequent changes. According to Arthur, the board continues to make decisions that prevent the national team from achieving stability. He stressed that constant changes in personnel and strategy can make it difficult for a team to develop consistency and build a settled combination.
Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said that accountability should be carried out at the appropriate time. He suggested that a detailed assessment of the team and management should take place after the completion of the tour, rather than making major judgments while the series is still underway.
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen also expressed surprise at the scale of the changes within Pakistan’s squad. Reacting to reports that some players had been sent back and that further alterations were being made, Pietersen questioned whether such extensive changes were really necessary.
The criticism comes after Pakistan’s disappointing results in England, which have once again raised questions about the team’s selection policy, preparation and overall management.
Former players have increasingly called for a more consistent approach from the PCB, arguing that frequent changes in the squad and management can affect players’ confidence and make it difficult to establish a strong combination.
The debate has also highlighted the different demands of international formats. While T20 cricket requires players to adapt quickly and perform in short matches, Test cricket requires endurance, technical discipline and the ability to maintain concentration over several days.
With Pakistan continuing to search for a settled Test combination, the PCB is now facing pressure to explain its selection decisions and establish a clearer long-term strategy for the national team.
