BANNU: An 11-point agreement has been reached between the Bannu Peace Committee and the police department to promote peace and help eliminate terrorism in the district.
Under the agreement, members of the Peace Committee will be required to provide full cooperation to the police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in the fight against terrorism. The police and Peace Committee will also work jointly to maintain law and order and strengthen peace in the area.
The agreement has been signed by PTI members of the National Assembly Sher Afzal Marwat and Naseem Ali Shah, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Pakhtun Yar, and Peace Committee President Hazratullah.
According to a copy of the agreement obtained by Geo News, members of the Peace Committee will immediately share information with police regarding suspicious activities and suspected terrorists. They have also agreed to extend full cooperation to law-enforcement agencies.
Committee Members Bound to Avoid Illegal Activities
The agreement requires Peace Committee members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and from becoming involved in any illegal activities.
They have also been directed to avoid any form of resistance or confrontation with the police.
The agreement places responsibilities on both sides. While the Peace Committee members have undertaken to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies, the police have assured them that measures will be taken to protect their lives and property.
Committee members will also cooperate with the police in promoting peace and maintaining law and order among the public.
Disputes to Be Resolved Through Dialogue
The two sides have agreed that if any disagreement arises between the police and the Peace Committee, the matter will be resolved through negotiations and dialogue rather than confrontation.
The agreement also provides for efforts to address the legitimate concerns and problems faced by members of the Peace Committee.
This provision is intended to establish a mechanism through which disputes can be addressed peacefully and prevent disagreements between the committee and law-enforcement authorities from escalating.
Joint Commitment Against Terrorism
Through the 11-point agreement, the police and Peace Committee have expressed a joint commitment to restoring peace in Bannu and eliminating terrorism.
The agreement outlines a cooperative framework in which local community representatives and law-enforcement agencies will work together to identify security threats, share relevant information and maintain public order.
The arrangement also places responsibility on Peace Committee members to ensure that their activities remain within the law while cooperating with authorities against militant activity.
