In response to the ongoing petroleum crisis and the economic pressures caused by regional conflict, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a series of strict austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption across the provincial government.
According to the announcement, the supply of official fuel to provincial ministers has been completely suspended until the petroleum crisis is resolved. Additionally, the petrol and diesel allowance for government vehicles used by senior officials has been reduced by 50 percent with immediate effect. The decision is part of broader efforts by the provincial administration to manage limited fuel resources and minimize government expenditure during the current crisis.
The chief minister has also imposed a ban on protocol vehicles that usually accompany provincial ministers and senior government officers. Under the new directive, only one vehicle will be allowed to accompany a minister or senior official when necessary for security reasons.
To further conserve fuel and reduce travel, the provincial government has decided to implement a work-from-home policy in government offices. Only essential staff will be required to attend offices physically, while the rest will perform their duties remotely.
The measures also extend to the education sector. Schools, colleges, and universities across Punjab will remain closed from March 10 to March 31. However, examinations will continue according to the existing schedule. Educational institutions have been encouraged to conduct online classes during the closure period to ensure that students’ academic activities continue without major disruption.
