In Karachi, the provincial Excise and Taxation Department has fixed the fee for obtaining preferred or “fancy” motor vehicle registration numbers at up to Rs2 million.

According to an official notification issued by the Sindh Excise and Taxation Department, vehicle owners who wish to secure a specific registration number of their choice can do so by paying an approved premium amount. The maximum fee for certain highly sought-after numbers has been set at Rs2 million.

As per the revised fee structure, individuals who want to obtain registration numbers such as 786 and 110 will be required to pay Rs2 million each. These numbers are considered highly desirable due to their religious and cultural significance, which increases demand among vehicle owners.

For three-digit registration numbers ranging from 111 to 999 (specific premium combinations), the department has set a fee of Rs1 million per number. Meanwhile, three-digit numbers between 100 and 900 (selected categories) will cost Rs500,000 per number.

Similarly, registration numbers ranging from 001 to 009 will also be available at a fee of Rs500,000 each. These low-digit numbers are generally regarded as prestigious and exclusive, contributing to their higher pricing.

For all other preferred choice numbers not included in the premium categories, vehicle owners will be required to pay Rs300,000 to secure their desired registration plate.

Officials stated that the new pricing structure aims to regulate the allocation of special numbers and generate additional revenue for the provincial government. The move also formalizes the process of acquiring fancy numbers by clearly defining categories and associated fees.

The Excise and Taxation Department clarified that the allocation of such numbers will follow the prescribed procedure outlined in the notification, and applicants must deposit the required fee before approval and issuance.
