ROHRI: Relatives of four brothers who were killed in a shooting at their home in Anwar Pur Dharejo village, within the jurisdiction of Kandhra Police Station, staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding a transparent investigation, arrest of the actual perpetrators and removal of the names of innocent people from the case.
The incident took place five months ago on the night of Eid-ul-Fitr, when armed men allegedly entered the victims’ house and opened indiscriminate fire. During the protest, the victims’ brother, Ghulam Hassan, son of Ali Hassan Dharejo, and their nephew, Gul Muhammad, son of Altaf Hussain Dharejo, spoke to the media and alleged that some people nominated in the case were innocent, while the actual suspects remained at large.
The relatives demanded that the police conduct an impartial and fact-based investigation, remove the names of those who were not involved and arrest those found responsible for the killings.
Ghulam Hassan Dharejo claimed that he was an eyewitness to the attack. According to his account, armed men entered their house on the night of Eid-ul-Fitr and suddenly began firing indiscriminately. He said he was also wounded by a bullet in his arm, while his four brothers — Mehdi Hassan, Akhtar Hussain, Ghulam Akbar and Ghulam Asghar, all sons of Ali Hassan Dharejo — sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene.
Ghulam Hassan said that despite being wounded during the attack, he managed to identify the alleged assailants. He claimed that he questioned them, saying they were known to the family and asking why they were killing his brothers. He alleged that the attackers then fired at him again, causing him to lose consciousness, before fleeing the scene while continuing to fire.
According to the victims’ relatives, an FIR was registered against 10 people on the complaint of their uncle following the incident. However, they alleged that the case included individuals who had not been involved in the attack, while the actual perpetrators had not been arrested.
The family expressed concern that an investigation not based on facts and evidence could undermine the case and prevent the victims from receiving justice. They urged senior police officials to examine the circumstances of the attack carefully and determine the identities and roles of all suspects through evidence and eyewitness accounts.
Gul Muhammad Dharejo said his maternal uncle, Ghulam Hassan, was both an eyewitness and an injured survivor of the shooting. He said his statement should be examined alongside forensic and other evidence collected from the crime scene. According to him, the testimony of an injured eyewitness could help investigators establish what happened and identify those actually responsible.
The protesting relatives alleged that Nadir Ali, son of Khadim Hussain Dharejo; Safdar Hussain, son of Khadim Hussain Dharejo; Jahangir, son of Gul Muhammad Dharejo; and Alamgir and Taimur, sons of Gul Muhammad Dharejo, were allegedly involved in the attack. They demanded that the allegations against these individuals be investigated transparently and that anyone against whom sufficient evidence was found be arrested and prosecuted according to law.
At the same time, Ghulam Hassan appealed to the Inspector General of Sindh Police, DIG Sukkur and SSP Sukkur Azhar Khan Mughal to order a fresh and impartial investigation into the case. He also demanded that the names of Lal Khan, son of Ahmed Khan Dharejo; Nabeel, son of Shahmeer Khan Dharejo; and Shahmeer Khan, son of Umeed Ali Dharejo, be removed from the FIR, claiming that these individuals had no involvement in the killings.
The relatives stressed that they did not want any innocent person to be punished. Their demand, they said, was simply that the actual perpetrators be identified through a fair investigation and brought to justice, while those falsely implicated be cleared of the allegations.
Ghulam Hassan also expressed concern for his personal safety and appealed to police and other law-enforcement agencies to provide him with protection. He said that five months had passed since the incident, but the alleged failure to arrest the actual perpetrators had increased anxiety among the victims’ family and raised serious concerns about their prospects of obtaining justice.
The bereaved family urged senior police authorities to conduct a complete, transparent and impartial investigation, examine all available evidence and eyewitness statements, remove innocent individuals from the case and arrest those found responsible for the murder of the four brothers.
The relatives said their four family members had been killed and that they wanted justice rather than revenge. They appealed to the authorities to ensure that the real perpetrators were identified, arrested and dealt with strictly according to law, so that the family could obtain justice for their deceased loved ones.
