LAHORE: Two suspects, allegedly involved in the killing of three policemen and injuring three others in separate attacks in Lahore, were killed in an alleged police encounter. Police identified the suspects as a father and son.
According to police, the suspects were being pursued by teams of the Crime Control Department (CCD), including the Model Town team, after they allegedly opened fire on police personnel in Lahore and fled in a government vehicle.
According to police, the suspects later abandoned the vehicle near Ravi Rayan in Sheikhupura and entered a house, where they allegedly held the occupants hostage at gunpoint.
Police teams surrounded the house and called on the suspects to surrender. However, the suspects allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on the police in an attempt to escape arrest.
A gun battle subsequently broke out, during which two suspects were killed, while a third escaped, according to police.
A search operation has been launched to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
The latest development came a day after two separate attacks on police teams in Lahore left three personnel dead and three others injured.
In the first incident, a police team conducting a raid to arrest a proclaimed offender came under fire at Peshay Khan Chowk in the Badami Bagh area, within the jurisdiction of Larri Adda Police Station.
Police said that the suspects opened indiscriminate fire on the team before fleeing the scene.
Sub-Inspector Adeel Ashiq and Head Constable Asad, both posted at Larri Adda police station, were martyred in the attack.
A heavy contingent of police subsequently reached the area and cordoned it off, while search operations were launched to track down the attackers.
Later the same day, another policeman, identified as Haris, was martyred in Nawan Kot, while three other personnel were injured in an attack allegedly linked to the same suspects.
Police had registered a case in connection with the Nawan Kot attack under provisions relating to terrorism, murder, attempted murder and other relevant sections of law.
The investigation subsequently led police to the suspected attackers, with officials also identifying another suspect believed to be involved in the attacks.
Police sources had earlier said two police officials were detained on suspicion of having links with the assailants.
An assistant sub-inspector and a constable were taken into custody after investigators allegedly found photographs on social media showing them with the suspected terrorists.
