Any Attack on Supreme Leader Will Trigger Full-Scale War, Warns Iranian President

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a strong warning that any attack on the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would amount to a declaration of full-scale war against Iran. His remarks come amid heightened regional tensions following claims by a former US ambassador that former President Donald Trump could attempt to target Iran’s top leader.

Speaking in response to recent statements attributed to Dan Shapiro, former US ambassador to Israel, President Pezeshkian said that aggression against Iran’s Supreme Leader would not be viewed as an isolated act but as a direct assault on the Iranian nation itself. “Any attack on the Supreme Leader will be equivalent to a complete war against Iran,” the Iranian president said, underscoring the seriousness with which Tehran views such threats.

The warning follows reports in Israeli media quoting Dan Shapiro, who served as US ambassador to Israel during former President Barack Obama’s administration. In an interview, Shapiro claimed that Donald Trump could attempt to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the coming weeks. The claim has not been confirmed by US officials, nor has Trump or his representatives responded publicly to the allegation.

President Pezeshkian strongly condemned the suggestion, describing it as extremely dangerous rhetoric that could push the region toward catastrophic conflict. He said that Iran has consistently faced pressure, instability, and hardship due to what he described as “long-standing, inhumane sanctions” imposed by the United States and its allies.

“The difficulties and suffering faced by the Iranian people are the result of years of unjust and inhuman sanctions imposed by America and its partners,” Pezeshkian said. He added that despite these pressures, Iran has continued to resist external coercion and defend its sovereignty.

Addressing the issue of the Supreme Leader directly, the Iranian president emphasized that Ayatollah Khamenei is not only the country’s highest political and religious authority but also a unifying symbol of the Iranian state. “Any aggression against the Supreme Leader is aggression against the entire Iranian nation,” he said, warning that such an act would leave Iran with no choice but to respond decisively.

The comments reflect Tehran’s longstanding position that targeting its leadership would cross a red line. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that while Iran does not seek war, it is fully prepared to defend itself against any form of external aggression.

The controversy erupted after Israeli media outlets reported remarks by Dan Shapiro suggesting that Donald Trump, if in a position of power, could seek to eliminate Iran’s Supreme Leader. Shapiro reportedly argued that Ayatollah Khamenei, now in his mid-80s, is in declining health and that Iran may be approaching a period of leadership transition. He also claimed that the United States could increase its military presence in the Middle East, making potential action against Iran easier and strengthening defensive preparations in case of retaliation.

These statements have fueled concern among analysts and diplomats, who warn that even speculation about targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader could dramatically escalate tensions in an already volatile region. Experts note that any such move would likely provoke a severe Iranian response, potentially drawing in regional actors and triggering a broader conflict across the Middle East.

Iran–US relations have remained tense for decades, marked by sanctions, proxy conflicts, and diplomatic standoffs. Tensions intensified further after the United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement and imposed maximum-pressure sanctions on Tehran. The 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani deepened hostilities and brought the two countries close to open conflict.

In recent months, regional instability has increased due to conflicts involving Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, and broader Middle Eastern dynamics. Against this backdrop, statements suggesting direct action against Iran’s leadership have been viewed in Tehran as highly provocative.

President Pezeshkian’s remarks appear aimed not only at Washington but also at the international community. By warning that an attack on the Supreme Leader would trigger full-scale war, Tehran is signaling that it considers such a scenario unacceptable and potentially disastrous for regional and global security.

Iranian officials have also stressed that threats and pressure will not force the country into submission. Instead, they argue, such actions only strengthen Iran’s resolve to defend its independence and political system.

So far, there has been no official response from the United States regarding Pezeshkian’s warning or the claims made by the former US ambassador. However, analysts say the exchange of sharp rhetoric highlights the fragile state of regional security and the risks posed by unverified claims and aggressive statements.

As tensions continue to simmer, observers are calling for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation. Many warn that miscalculations or inflammatory rhetoric could quickly spiral into a wider conflict with far-reaching consequences.
