London: Depression, one of the most common mental health disorders today, is rapidly increasing across all age groups. New research suggests that simple lifestyle changes, particularly physical activity, can significantly reduce its symptoms and improve mood.

A study conducted by the University of Lincoln in the UK examined data from 73 clinical trials involving 5,000 individuals suffering from depression. Most participants were already taking antidepressant medications. The analysis revealed that regular exercise can be as effective as medications or psychological therapies in alleviating the symptoms of depression.

Researchers explained that physical activity boosts brain neurotransmitter function, which helps improve mood and reduces the severity of depressive symptoms. In simple terms, exercise triggers the release of chemicals in the body that naturally enhance feelings of happiness and well-being.

Moreover, exercise activates factors that are crucial for brain development, further contributing to improved mental health and lower depression intensity. Even light to moderate exercise—activities that raise heart rate slightly—can deliver mental health benefits.

Aerobic exercises such as brisk walking, climbing stairs, or combining cardio with strength training have shown the most significant impact in preventing depression. However, even simple brisk walking alone can benefit mental health, while practices like yoga may sometimes yield results comparable to jogging, depending on individual preferences.

Researchers also emphasized that exercise is cost-effective and has minimal side effects, while positively affecting the body, mind, and emotions.

Depression is a complex mental disorder that affects not only mood but also the body. Individuals with depression often feel persistent sadness and a sense of helplessness, and their overall physical health can also be compromised. Physical activity, however, offers a practical, low-cost, and effective way to manage symptoms and enhance overall well-being.

This study highlights the power of regular exercise as a preventive and therapeutic measure, providing hope to millions struggling with depression in today’s fast-paced world.
