ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has rejected a claim by the Afghan Taliban that weapons are being smuggled from Pakistan into Afghanistan, describing the allegation as baseless and contrary to established facts.
In a statement, the ministry said the claim regarding arms smuggling from Pakistan to Afghanistan was unfounded and appeared to be an attempt to divert attention from the actual issue.
According to the ministry, Afghanistan already possesses a significant quantity of weapons left behind by US and allied forces following their withdrawal from the country. It said Afghanistan was also home to large stockpiles of weapons dating back to the Soviet era.
The ministry argued that linking the weapons present in Afghanistan to Pakistan was an effort to shift focus away from the real security concerns facing the region.
The statement further alleged that terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory continue to enjoy shelter, facilitation and freedom of movement. According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Information, these groups are involved in planning and carrying out terrorist attacks inside Pakistan.
The ministry urged the Afghan Taliban authorities to take effective action against militant groups operating from their territory and prevent Afghan soil from being used for terrorist activities against any country.
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concerns over the presence of militant groups in Afghanistan and has called on the Afghan authorities to ensure that their territory is not used for attacks against Pakistan.
The latest statement comes in response to allegations attributed to the Afghan Taliban regarding the alleged movement of weapons from Pakistan into Afghanistan. Islamabad has categorically rejected the allegation and maintained that the issue should be viewed in the broader context of weapons already present inside Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Information emphasized that addressing terrorism and preventing militant groups from operating freely should remain the priority rather than making what it described as unsubstantiated allegations against Pakistan.
The ministry also called for effective measures to prevent terrorist organizations from using Afghan territory for planning or launching attacks against neighbouring countries.
Pakistan’s position, according to the statement, is that Afghanistan must take concrete steps against militant networks operating from its soil and ensure that its territory is not used to undermine the security of other states.
