On Saturday, the United States launched an operation in Venezuela, during which U.S. Delta Force personnel removed President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from their presidential residence.
U.S. President Donald Trump shared a photo on his social media account following Maduro’s capture, stating that Maduro was being transported on a U.S. naval ship to New York.
At a news briefing, Trump said that under his orders, the U.S. military conducted an extraordinary operation in Venezuela, involving multiple aircraft and helicopters. He added that the operation had been secretly planned in early December and that the U.S. was prepared for a second strike if necessary.
Trump further stated that Maduro and his wife were taken from their bedroom and would face charges in the United States related to drugs and terrorism.
According to U.S. media outlet CNN, American troops dragged Maduro and his wife from their bed, removed them from their room, and took them into custody.
The report also stated that the CIA had been monitoring Maduro’s high-security compound.
Meanwhile, Venezuela’s ruling party claimed that Maduro was at his residence on a military base when the U.S. attack took place.
