ISLAMABAD: The All Pakistan Goods Transport Alliance has announced an indefinite nationwide strike starting August 8 in protest against government policies affecting the transport sector.
Addressing a press conference, Alliance President Malik Shahzad Awan said the strike would begin on Saturday, August 8, and continue until the group’s demands are met.
The alliance called for the resignation of Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and demanded the immediate withdrawal of recent increases in petroleum prices and toll taxes.
Transporters also urged the government to fix diesel and petrol prices on a monthly basis instead of making daily adjustments. They further demanded that the withholding tax be reduced from 7 percent to 2 percent.
Among other demands, the alliance called for the withdrawal of axle load enforcement measures, the repeal of Customs SRO 1619/2024, and the abolition of the law requiring the removal of 10- to 20-year-old commercial vehicles.
The transport body also sought the repeal of the Rs9.7 million compensation law for road accident fatalities and called for the issuance of HTV driving licences to eligible drivers.
Additionally, the alliance demanded adequate parking facilities at Karachi Port and Port Qasim, improved law and order in Balochistan, and the cancellation of the Sindh government’s third-party insurance policy.
