Mumbai: Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and actress Urmila Matondkar, who were frequently linked during the 1990s, are back in the spotlight after a senior Indian journalist claimed they had secretly married during their relationship.
According to Indian media reports, senior entertainment journalist Jyothi Venkatesh made the claim during an interview on a YouTube channel. He said he first heard about the alleged marriage from Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi while visiting the set of the film Gentleman.
Venkatesh recalled that Chiranjeevi asked him why he had never written about the alleged marriage between Varma and Urmila. He further claimed that Chiranjeevi told him the wedding had taken place at a temple in Andhra Pradesh and even provided the contact details of the priest who had reportedly conducted the ceremony.
The journalist said that before publishing the story, he contacted Urmila Matondkar to verify the claim. According to him, the actress became emotional, began crying, and questioned why he would write such a story about her. Venkatesh also stated that he sought Ram Gopal Varma’s response, but the filmmaker declined to comment.
He further alleged that the relationship eventually ended because Urmila wanted to legalize their marriage, while Varma was not prepared to do so at the time.
It is important to note that these claims have not been independently verified, and neither Urmila Matondkar nor Ram Gopal Varma has publicly confirmed that they were secretly married.
The two worked together on several successful films, including Rangeela, Daud, Satya, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, which fueled speculation about their relationship during the 1990s.
