London: Fuel theft has increased sharply across the United Kingdom following a rise in petrol and diesel prices, with an estimated £200,000 worth of fuel being stolen every day, according to media reports.
Reports indicate that the total financial impact of fuel theft has risen by 48% since fuel prices increased.
The price surge reportedly followed the Iran conflict, during which petrol prices increased by 27 pence per litre and diesel prices rose by 37 pence per litre. Since then, incidents of motorists leaving petrol stations without paying have become more frequent.
According to media reports, some drivers fill their vehicles with fuel and then drive away without making payment, causing significant financial losses to fuel retailers.
The Petrol Retailers Association (PRA) has also expressed concern over the growing number of abusive incidents involving petrol station staff. The association said that rising fuel prices have not only contributed to an increase in theft but have also led to more cases of verbal abuse and aggressive behavior directed at employees.
Industry representatives are urging stronger enforcement measures and improved security at petrol stations to help reduce fuel theft and protect frontline workers.
