BADIN: A 50-foot breach reportedly developed in the Mirwah Talhar canal near Serani town in Badin district during heavy rainfall late at night, inundating several nearby villages and raising fears of further flooding in surrounding areas.
According to local reports, the breach occurred at around 1:00 a.m., allowing a large volume of water to flow into nearby settlements. As a result, Arbab Rasool Bakhsh Mandhro Village and Arbab Iqbal Colony were completely submerged, while floodwater continued to spread toward neighboring localities, causing concern among residents.
Following reports of the incident, Deputy Commissioner Badin Yasar Bhatti, Assistant Commissioner Badin Rajesh Kumar, Dr. Sajjad Chandio, former Union Council Chairman Sikandar Ali Mandhro, and officials from the Irrigation Department reached the site at around 9:00 a.m. to assess the situation.
During the visit, the Assistant Commissioner directed Irrigation Department officials to immediately mobilize heavy machinery and take emergency measures to plug the breach in order to prevent further damage and protect nearby villages from flooding.
According to sources, the breach had not yet been fully contained, and there remained a risk of floodwater entering additional villages if emergency repair work was delayed.
The district administration said it is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed relevant departments to undertake relief and rescue measures, minimize potential losses, and assist affected communities.
Meanwhile, local residents expressed concern over what they described as the alleged poor performance of the Irrigation Department, urging authorities to seal the breach without delay and prevent further flooding of villages and agricultural land.
Emergency repair work is reportedly underway, while officials continue efforts to bring the situation under control and safeguard nearby communities.
