SAN FRANCISCO: WhatsApp is testing a new update that significantly enhances the way users interact with photos and videos, introducing a redesigned media viewer with built-in reply and reaction features.
The new functionality has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp Beta for Android, according to a report by WABetaInfo.
WhatsApp first introduced the ability to reply to or react to photos and videos in 2024. However, users have had to exit full-screen media view before they could send a reaction or reply.
The latest redesign aims to simplify that process by allowing users to interact with media directly from the full-screen view.
Key Features of the New Update
The redesigned media viewer includes a new response bar displayed at the bottom of the screen while viewing photos or videos in full-screen mode.
Users will be able to:
- React instantly using default emoji shortcuts.
- Access the full emoji reaction panel with a single tap.
- Open the emoji keyboard by tapping the “+” button.
- Type and send text replies without leaving the media viewer.
- Attach additional photos or videos directly from the same interface.
- Record and send voice messages while viewing media.
- Share other types of content through the integrated chat bar.
The update is intended to make conversations more seamless by eliminating the need to return to the chat window before responding to shared media.
Limited Beta Release
The redesigned interface is currently available to a limited number of Android beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will be rolled out to all users on the stable version of the app.
As with many beta features, the company may continue testing and refining the interface before making it widely available.
The update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience by making media interactions faster, more convenient, and more intuitive.
