ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam has offered dialogue to protesters staging a sit-in in Rawalakot, urging them to engage in peaceful negotiations and distance themselves from elements with negative intentions.
Speaking on Geo News’ current affairs program Jirga, Amir Muqam said that the people of Rawalakot are an integral part of Kashmir.
“The people of Rawalakot are Kashmiris, have always been Kashmiris, and will remain Kashmiris,” he said.
The minister’s remarks came amid ongoing tensions in the region following recent political statements and security concerns.
Addressing the protesters, Muqam said that not everyone participating in the sit-in should be viewed as a militant or extremist. He maintained that the majority of those taking part in the protest are patriotic citizens with genuine concerns.
He urged the demonstrators to separate themselves from individuals pursuing harmful or disruptive agendas and to join the government for constructive dialogue.
“Everyone participating in the sit-in is not a terrorist. Most of them are patriotic people. They should distance themselves from those with negative intentions and come to the negotiating table,” he said.
Amir Muqam also commented on recent remarks made by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who had faced criticism over his statements regarding the people of Rawalakot.
The federal minister clarified that Khawaja Asif’s remarks represented his personal opinion and did not reflect the official policy of either the federal government or the ruling party.
“That statement was his personal view and not the policy of the government or the party,” Muqam stated.
Highlighting the historical role of the people of Poonch and Rawalakot, the minister said they had made significant sacrifices for Pakistan during past conflicts and deserved respect and recognition for their contributions.
He noted that the residents of Poonch have long served as guardians of the country’s frontiers and should be honored for their patriotism and commitment.
The minister reiterated the government’s preference for resolving issues through dialogue rather than confrontation and called on all stakeholders to cooperate in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
His offer of negotiations comes as authorities continue to monitor the situation in Rawalakot, where protests have drawn national attention. The government has expressed hope that meaningful discussions with protest representatives can help reduce tensions and lead to a peaceful resolution.
Officials have emphasized that dialogue remains the most effective way to address public grievances while preserving law and order. The government’s latest appeal signals its willingness to engage with peaceful protesters and work toward a mutually acceptable solution through negotiations.
