GLASGOW: Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem finished outside the medal positions in the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games, with Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga winning the gold medal.
Competing in Glasgow as the defending Commonwealth champion, Arshad was unable to reproduce his best form during the final.
His first attempt was ruled invalid, while he recorded 77.41 metres on his second throw and 75.39 metres on his third attempt. His performance placed him ninth among the 12 finalists, ending his campaign without a medal.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga secured the gold medal with a best throw of 89.75 metres, producing the winning performance of the competition.
India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal after recording a best throw of 85.83 metres, while fellow Indian Yash Veer Singh finished third to take the bronze medal.
A total of 12 athletes competed in the men’s javelin throw final, with Arshad entering the event as the defending champion after winning gold in the previous edition of the Commonwealth Games.
Earlier in the competition, the Pakistani athlete had qualified for the final by finishing seventh in the qualifying round with a best throw of 78.63 metres.
Although Arshad Nadeem fell short of the podium on this occasion, he remains one of Pakistan’s most accomplished track and field athletes, having earned international recognition through his performances at major global competitions. His result in Glasgow marks a disappointing end to his title defence, but he is expected to continue preparing for future international championships.
