KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Karachi and several parts of Sindh starting today, as a weakening weather system continues to influence conditions across the region.
According to the Met Office, the intense low-pressure system that had formed over southern Madhya Pradesh, India, has weakened and is now present as a well-marked low-pressure area near Rajasthan.
The PMD said the weather system is expected to weaken further over the next 24 hours. Despite its gradual weakening, it continues to affect weather patterns by drawing monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal into the upper and central parts of Pakistan.
The department also noted that a westerly weather system is currently influencing the northern regions of the country, contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions.
Under the influence of these weather systems, rain with thunderstorms is expected in several districts of Sindh. Areas likely to receive intermittent rainfall until August 3 include Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mithi, Sanghar, Hyderabad, and surrounding regions.
The forecast also includes the possibility of rain in Karachi, where changing weather conditions may bring showers and thunderstorm activity during the forecast period.
Although the low-pressure system has weakened, meteorologists say the continued inflow of moist monsoon winds is likely to support rainfall across parts of the province over the coming days.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert, as heavy downpours in some locations could lead to temporary urban flooding, water accumulation on roads, and disruptions to traffic. Farmers and local authorities have also been urged to monitor weather updates and take precautionary measures where necessary.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the movement and intensity of the weather system and issue updated forecasts if conditions change. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official weather advisories, especially in areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and localized flooding.
