Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have confirmed the killing of a militant associated with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during a joint security operation. The operation, conducted by CTD Mardan Region in collaboration with Nowshera Police, targeted a suspected militant hideout after actionable intelligence indicated the presence of wanted individuals in the area.

According to officials, the operation took place in the locality of Ghaibana Baba, where a search-and-strike mission was launched early in the morning. As law-enforcement personnel approached the area, they reportedly came under fire from armed suspects. Security teams responded immediately, and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

During the encounter, a militant identified as Hammad Zahir, affiliated with the TTP’s Intikhab Alam group, was fatally hit. CTD officials stated that the militant had been involved in several acts of violence, including the targeted killing of Police Constable Maqsood. The attack on Constable Maqsood, which had caused widespread concern within the police force, had been under investigation for months, and intelligence reports had linked Hammad Zahir directly with the incident.

Authorities further revealed that the militant had a long list of charges registered against him. He was wanted in cases relating to murder, attempted murder, extortion, as well as other serious offences that fall under terrorism laws. CTD officials added that the militant’s network had been involved in planning activities intended to disrupt security conditions in parts of Mardan and Nowshera.

The joint operation was launched following a comprehensive intelligence effort aimed at tracking down elements linked with the proscribed group. Security forces have been conducting intensified operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in recent months, particularly in areas where militant activity has shown signs of resurgence. Officials note that the latest action is part of a reinforced counterterrorism strategy designed to dismantle militant infrastructure and neutralize individuals involved in violent activities.

During the search, law-enforcement personnel secured the area and continued combing operations to determine whether additional individuals were present. Initial reports indicate that Hammad Zahir may have been operating with a small network, though no other suspects were apprehended at the scene. The CTD stated that efforts are ongoing to trace remaining members of the group.

Following the encounter, teams recovered evidence from the location. According to CTD sources, weapons and ammunition were found at the site, consistent with the intelligence that the militant was actively armed. The collected material will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have emphasized that forensic and ballistic analyses are crucial in connecting recovered weapons with previous incidents linked to the militant group.

Local police officials said the operation reflects improved coordination between district police units and specialized counterterrorism teams. They added that joint actions are necessary to effectively counter organized militant groups that rely on mobility and remote hideouts to evade law enforcement. According to officials, strong cooperation helps ensure that intelligence is acted upon quickly and decisively.

Community members in surrounding villages were informed to stay indoors during the operation. Residents reported hearing bursts of gunfire early in the morning but said that security personnel maintained full control of the situation. Police later reassured the public that the area had been secured and that there was no threat to local communities.

Security analysts note that while the TTP has been fragmented into smaller factions, many splinter groups continue to pose security challenges in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These factions often operate in rural or semi-rural areas, relying on local networks and familiarity with terrain to evade detection. The Intikhab Alam group, to which the slain militant belonged, is believed to be involved in targeted attacks against police and state personnel.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing proactive measures against groups involved in subversive activities. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a CTD official said that security forces will maintain pressure on networks that threaten stability. He added that recent operations reflect a strategy focused on preventing militants from regrouping or re-establishing strongholds.

The killing of a wanted militant is seen by officials as a major development in reducing the threat of targeted attacks in the region. The CTD has stated that operations will continue based on credible intelligence and that further arrests or actions may follow in the coming days. Investigations related to the militant’s communications, associates, and previous movements are also underway.

Local police have extended appreciation to the CTD teams for the swift and coordinated action, emphasizing that such operations enhance overall safety for law-enforcement officers as well as civilians. The targeted killing of Constable Maqsood had been a significant concern for the force, and officials expressed hope that dismantling the group responsible will provide closure to the slain officer’s family.

The provincial government has been briefed on the operation, and officials are expected to receive updated reports as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, the area where the confrontation occurred remains under monitoring to ensure that no further threats emerge.
