Punjab’s revolutionary initiative in solid waste management continues to gain international attention, with several countries now seeking guidance from the province on handling municipal waste. This was stated by Punjab’s Minister for Local Government, Zeeshan Rafiq, during a press conference held in Lahore, where he highlighted the remarkable progress made under the “Suthra Punjab” program.

According to the minister, Suthra Punjab has now emerged as the world’s largest integrated solid waste management system, setting new standards in efficiency, scale, and community impact. He noted that the program, launched under the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, has expanded far beyond major cities and is now active across the entire province, including rural regions.

Rafiq emphasized that the program includes a structured waste recycling process that is already operational in multiple districts. This system not only ensures cleaner surroundings but also promotes environmental sustainability by reducing landfill pressure and encouraging resource recovery.

The minister also referenced international acknowledgment of Punjab’s achievements. He shared that a leading American publication had praised Suthra Punjab for becoming the largest waste collection and management system of its kind in the world. Such recognition, he added, reflects the global significance of Punjab’s approach to cleanliness and environmental management.

A key highlight of his address was the growing international interest in the province’s model. “Today, many countries are seeking guidance from Punjab on solid waste solutions,” he said. This interest stems from the program’s logistical scale, community coverage, and innovative mechanisms for collection, recycling, and disposal.

Rafiq stated that the program has transformed public spaces across Punjab within just eight months, delivering efficient, visible improvements. He also pointed out the program’s socioeconomic impact, noting that thousands of employment opportunities have been created through Suthra Punjab, supporting families and boosting local economies.

The provincial minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing cleanliness systems throughout Punjab. He reiterated that the program’s expansion into villages marks a historic milestone, ensuring that even remote areas benefit from modern waste management services.
