Lahore: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially confirmed that the Pakistan men’s national football team will participate in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup later this year, marking the country’s first-ever appearance in a FIFA tournament.
According to the PFF, the tournament will be held in Indonesia during September and October, providing Pakistan with a landmark opportunity to compete on the international stage under a FIFA event.
The federation said Pakistan will compete in the top tier of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, where it is set to face several established Asian teams, including India, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
Pakistan is one of three invited nations granted special entry into the competition. The participating teams will be divided into two groups, with the tournament featuring a round-robin format before the knockout stages.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani described the participation as a historic milestone for Pakistani football.
“Following the participation of Pakistan’s women’s national team in the FIFA Series, our men’s national team will now compete in its first-ever FIFA event. This is a historic achievement for Pakistan football,” Gilani said.
He added that the tournament would provide the national side with an excellent opportunity to compete against strong opponents, gain valuable international experience, and showcase its talent on a global platform.
The federation believes that participation in the FIFA ASEAN Cup will contribute to the long-term development of football in Pakistan by exposing players to higher levels of competition and helping the team improve its international standing.
The confirmation follows earlier reports that Pakistan had been invited to the competition. The Pakistan Football Federation has now formally announced the team’s participation, ending speculation over its involvement.
The inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup is expected to bring together leading teams from Southeast Asia along with invited nations, offering Pakistan a chance to test itself against experienced regional rivals and make its debut in a FIFA-organised men’s tournament.
