In a significant security lapse in the United Kingdom, authorities are currently searching for two inmates who were mistakenly released from prison in London. According to British media reports, the incident occurred at HMP Wandsworth, a facility that has been under scrutiny before for operational issues.
The two prisoners have been identified as 24-year-old Ibrahim Kaddour Sharif, originally from Algeria, and 35-year-old William Smith. Sharif was erroneously released on October 29, while Smith was mistakenly freed on November 3. Both individuals were serving sentences at the Wandsworth prison when the administrative error took place.
This incident comes just five days after another prisoner, Hudish Kibato, who had been convicted of sexual offenses, was also wrongly released from custody. That case had already triggered widespread concern across the country regarding prison management and oversight procedures.
The repeated errors have led to strong criticism of Justice Minister David Lammy. Critics argue that despite assurances of enhanced security checks and improved management systems, the failures highlight deeper issues within the prison administration. Members of the Conservative Party in Parliament have publicly questioned the reliability of the justice system under current leadership, emphasizing that such mistakes pose a direct threat to public safety.
Government records further underline the severity of the issue. Between March 2024 and March 2025, a total of 262 inmates were mistakenly released in the United Kingdom—representing a staggering 128 percent increase compared to the previous year. This rise has intensified calls for urgent reforms, better oversight mechanisms, and accountability across the prison system.
The London Metropolitan Police have appealed to the public for assistance in locating the two individuals. Authorities have urged residents to avoid approaching them directly and instead report any information that may assist in their recapture.
