Melbourne: A total of 14 cities across Australia and New Zealand have submitted bids to host matches during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, which is scheduled to be jointly hosted by the two countries.
According to Australian media reports, the tournament is expected to be held during October and November 2028, with Australia and New Zealand serving as co-hosts.
The tournament organisers had invited expressions of interest from potential host cities, and 14 cities from the two nations responded with proposals to stage World Cup fixtures. However, organisers are expected to select only eight to ten host cities, meaning several applicants will miss out on hosting matches.
Reports indicate that the final selection will be made in line with International Cricket Council (ICC) guidelines. The ICC is aiming to strike a balance between providing widespread regional representation and ensuring the tournament remains logistically efficient.
According to the reports, the governing body prefers a more compact hosting model to simplify tournament operations, scheduling and travel arrangements across both countries. Reducing the number of venues is also expected to minimise travel for participating teams, match officials and supporters, improving the overall tournament experience.
Australian media further reported that the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is expected to host the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, reinforcing its status as one of cricket’s premier international venues.
The official list of selected host cities is expected to be announced after organisers complete their evaluation of the bids and confirm the tournament’s final venue plan.
