KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has criticised Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over remarks made during a political rally, saying that no province, city, or region should be ridiculed for political purposes.
Responding to Nawaz Sharif’s comments, Memon said political differences were a normal part of democracy, but the land and people of Sindh and Kashmir should not be turned into the subject of jokes or sarcasm.
“Nawaz Sharif Sahib, politics will continue, but please do not make the land and people of Sindh and Kashmir the subject of ridicule,” Memon said in his statement.
He added that while political rivalry is understandable, mocking any province, city, or region is unacceptable. According to Memon, such remarks by a former prime minister were not only inappropriate but also reflected poor political judgment.
The Sindh minister further stated that using the name of a city or district in a political speech as a comparison or in a mocking manner demonstrated a lack of political maturity.
Memon also referred to Nawaz Sharif’s own call for reducing political hostility, saying that although the PML-N leader had urged political opponents to avoid bitterness, his own choice of words was contributing to unnecessary political division and tension.
The criticism follows Nawaz Sharif’s address at an election rally in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, where he responded to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
During the speech, Nawaz Sharif remarked, “Don’t mistake Kashmir for Kashmore; this is Mirpur, not Mirpurkhas.” He also addressed Bilawal Bhutto by saying that political parties should engage in healthy political exchanges but avoid conflict and hostility.
Sharjeel Memon’s statement represents the PPP’s response to those remarks. As of now, there has been no further public response from Nawaz Sharif or the PML-N regarding Memon’s criticism.
