LONDON: A new study has challenged the widely held belief that spending time in the sun alone is enough to significantly increase the body’s vitamin D levels.
Vitamin D plays a vital role in maintaining healthy bones, supporting the immune system, and regulating several other essential bodily functions. Because the body can produce vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight, it is often referred to as the “sunshine vitamin.”
However, the latest research suggests that the relationship between sunlight exposure and vitamin D production may not be as straightforward as previously believed.
According to the study, simply spending more time in the sun does not necessarily lead to a significant increase in vitamin D levels for everyone.
Researchers noted that vitamin D production depends on several factors beyond sunlight exposure, including skin pigmentation, age, geographical location, season, time of day, clothing, sunscreen use, and individual biological differences.
The findings indicate that relying solely on sunlight may not be sufficient for many people to maintain optimal vitamin D levels, particularly those living in regions with limited sunlight or individuals at higher risk of deficiency.
Health experts advise that people concerned about their vitamin D status should consult healthcare professionals, who may recommend dietary sources, fortified foods, or vitamin D supplements when appropriate.
The researchers emphasized that while moderate sunlight exposure remains beneficial for overall health, it should not be viewed as the only or guaranteed source of adequate vitamin D. They called for further studies to better understand the complex relationship between sunlight exposure and vitamin D production in different populations.
