WASHINGTON: The United States has launched an intelligence investigation into Russia’s possible involvement in Iranian drone attacks targeting CIA facilities in the Gulf region, according to a report by Reuters citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.
Reuters reported that U.S. intelligence agencies are examining whether Russia assisted Iran by providing targeting intelligence, advanced drone technology, or other forms of technical support used in the attacks.
Four sources familiar with the investigation told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity, that U.S. officials have not yet reached any definitive conclusions regarding Russia’s role.
However, the sources said the unusual effectiveness and precision of the attacks, along with Russia’s broader technical cooperation with Iran, have become key areas of focus in the ongoing investigation.
Reuters noted that previous reports by the agency and other media outlets, as well as statements by U.S. officials, have alleged that Russia provided intelligence and other assistance to Iran for attacks against U.S. targets in the Gulf region.
According to the report, the current investigation specifically examining Russia’s possible role in attacks on CIA facilities has not previously been disclosed publicly.
Reuters and other sources said that at least two CIA facilities were reportedly targeted in March.
One of the reported targets was a CIA station located within the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, while another was a facility in eastern Iraq.
Some sources also claimed that additional CIA sites were targeted, although they did not provide further details.
The investigation remains ongoing, and U.S. intelligence agencies have not publicly released findings confirming Russian involvement. Neither Russian nor Iranian authorities had publicly responded to the allegations in the report.
