KABUL: The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed experienced middle-order batter Rahmat Shah as the captain of the national One-Day International (ODI) and Test teams.
In an official statement, the ACB announced that Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been named vice-captain for both formats.
According to the board, Rahmat Shah takes over the leadership role after Hashmatullah Shahidi stepped down as captain. Shahidi led Afghanistan in 55 One-Day Internationals during his tenure.
Rahmat Shah has served as Afghanistan’s vice-captain since 2021, making him a natural successor to the role.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board said Rahmat Shah’s first assignment as captain will be the upcoming ODI and Test series against Ireland.
Rahmat Shah made his international debut in 2013 and has since become one of Afghanistan’s most experienced cricketers.
He has represented Afghanistan in 128 One-Day Internationals and 12 Test matches, earning a reputation as a dependable middle-order batter and a key figure in the national side.
The ACB said his extensive international experience and leadership background made him the ideal choice to guide Afghanistan’s red-ball and 50-over teams into their next phase.
The appointment marks a new chapter for Afghanistan cricket as the team prepares for upcoming international assignments under Rahmat Shah’s leadership.
