NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has called on the U.S. federal government to cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) and execute its arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In a video statement shared on social media, Mamdani said that while New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest a foreign head of government, the U.S. federal government does possess the relevant jurisdiction.
He urged the federal authorities to work with the ICC and enforce the court’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu.
Mamdani stated that he agrees with the ICC’s decision to issue the warrant and said the city administration had reviewed all legal aspects of the matter under existing laws.
According to the mayor, the review concluded that New York City has no legal authority to detain or arrest the Israeli prime minister.
In his remarks, Mamdani accused Netanyahu of committing war crimes and genocide against Palestinians, alleging that he bears responsibility for the deaths of more than 73,000 people.
He further stated that Netanyahu would not be welcomed in New York.
The ICC has issued arrest warrants related to the conflict, but the allegations remain contested, and legal and diplomatic disputes over the court’s jurisdiction and enforcement continue.
