KARACHI: The Sindh Education Department has decided to introduce a facial recognition-based attendance system as part of measures aimed at improving transparency and accountability within the department.
According to reports, the department also plans to take action against absent employees and staff members found to possess allegedly fake academic degrees.
Sources within the Education Department said the move is intended to strengthen attendance monitoring and address concerns regarding employee verification.
The decision comes amid a large number of applications for pre-retirement (early retirement) submitted by employees, which, according to departmental sources, has created administrative and financial challenges for the Finance Division.
The sources stated that approximately 15,000 teachers and non-teaching employees have applied for early retirement.
Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has initiated a verification process of the academic qualifications of employees recruited by the Sindh Education Department between 1989 and 2020.
According to the report, the verification exercise is focused on examining the authenticity of educational degrees submitted by employees appointed during that period.
Officials have not yet announced a timeline for the implementation of the facial recognition attendance system or provided further details regarding the technology that will be used.
The Education Department is expected to issue additional guidelines once the attendance system is finalized and the verification process progresses. The measures are part of broader efforts to improve administrative oversight and ensure compliance with departmental regulations.
