The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has intensified its ongoing crackdown against electricity theft and illegal power connections in Sanghar city. Acting on the directives of senior WAPDA officials and Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Asad Laghari, strict actions have been taken against the so-called kunda mafia and defaulters who have been causing significant financial losses to the power department.
According to reliable sources, the joint operation was conducted with the support of Sindh Rangers and Sanghar Police. The teams carried out raids in several localities of Sanghar, where numerous illegal connections, commonly known as kunda systems, were detected and immediately disconnected. Simultaneously, consumers who had failed to pay their electricity bills were also penalized, with notices issued for immediate payment.
The operation marks one of the most comprehensive anti-theft drives in the district in recent months. Authorities confirmed that the action is part of a broader province-wide campaign initiated by WAPDA to curb electricity theft and improve revenue recovery. During the raids, several households and businesses were found using illegal lines, resulting in not only monetary loss but also severe pressure on the city’s already fragile power infrastructure.
Speaking to the media, SDO Asad Laghari stated that a strict “zero-tolerance policy” has been adopted against power theft and bill defaulters. He emphasized that no one, regardless of their social or political influence, will be allowed to take the law into their own hands or exploit the power system for personal gain.
“The operation will continue without discrimination,” Laghari asserted. “Electricity theft not only damages the department financially but also leads to power shortages and breakdowns that affect honest consumers. We urge citizens to support our efforts by refraining from illegal practices and by paying their bills on time.”
He further added that the cooperation of local residents is crucial to ensure a stable and efficient electricity supply. The public has been advised to report any instances of power theft or illegal connections in their areas to the WAPDA office so that timely action can be taken.
Officials also mentioned that the crackdown aims to improve the overall efficiency of the electricity distribution system in Sanghar, ensuring uninterrupted power supply to law-abiding consumers. Rangers and police authorities have reiterated their commitment to continue assisting WAPDA teams in maintaining law and order during these operations.
The residents of Sanghar have largely welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that such measures will help reduce frequent load shedding and power fluctuations in the city.
