WASHINGTON: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that another American service member has died in northern Iraq during an operation involving the disposal of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone.
According to a CENTCOM statement, the incident occurred on July 18, when the U.S. military was conducting operations in northern Iraq.
CENTCOM said the service member was killed while carrying out a controlled detonation to safely dispose of unexploded munitions remaining after an Iranian drone had been shot down. The military did not provide additional operational details but stated that the incident happened during efforts to neutralize the remaining explosives.
The command described the death as occurring in the line of duty and said the circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be reviewed.
The announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent attacks involving U.S. forces in the Middle East.
CENTCOM also confirmed that, after an extensive search operation, U.S. personnel recovered unidentified human remains from the incident site on the same day. According to the statement, the process of identifying and confirming the remains is still underway.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the deceased service member, pending notification of the next of kin.
The latest fatality follows another recent incident in the region. According to CENTCOM, two U.S. service members were killed, one was reported missing, and four others were injured following what the report describes as an Iranian missile attack on Jordan.
The incidents underscore the increasingly volatile security environment facing U.S. forces deployed across the Middle East, where tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated in recent weeks.
CENTCOM said it continues to monitor the security situation closely and remains committed to protecting U.S. personnel and maintaining operational readiness across its area of responsibility.
