WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States carried out heavy military strikes against Iran, describing the operation as a response to the killing of American service members and reaffirming Washington’s determination to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters after returning to Washington following the FIFA World Cup final, President Trump said the attacks were conducted overnight in retaliation for the deaths of U.S. troops.
“We carried out a very strong attack on Iran tonight,” Trump said, adding that the operation was intended as a response to the killing of Americans.
The U.S. president expressed sorrow over the deaths of American military personnel, saying the country deeply mourned the loss of its soldiers.
“We are very saddened by the deaths of our troops,” Trump said.
According to the president, the fallen service members had been carrying out their mission to ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons. He said the strikes were also intended as a tribute to those who lost their lives while serving the United States.
Trump stated that the United States would continue taking decisive action in response to attacks on its personnel, emphasizing that protecting American forces remains a top priority for his administration.
In addition to discussing the military operation, President Trump commented on the recently concluded FIFA World Cup, describing the tournament as one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
He congratulated FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the organization’s team for successfully hosting the competition.
“People from all over the world came to the United States, and they liked our country,” Trump said, praising the event’s organization and international participation.
Meanwhile, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on the social media platform X that it had launched a new wave of strikes against Iran for the ninth consecutive night.
According to CENTCOM, the latest operations are aimed at further degrading Iran’s military capabilities, particularly assets that the U.S. says have been used to threaten commercial shipping and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The command said the campaign is intended to reduce Iran’s operational capacity and enhance maritime security in one of the world’s most strategically important waterways.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical route for global energy supplies, with a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas exports passing through the narrow waterway. Any escalation in the region has the potential to affect international shipping, energy markets, and regional stability.
The latest statements from President Trump and CENTCOM come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides engaged in an increasingly volatile confrontation.
