WASHINGTON: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has confirmed that two American service members were killed and several others were injured during Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting US forces in Jordan.
In a statement, CENTCOM said the attack occurred on July 17, when US and allied forces were defending against Iranian missile and drone strikes in Jordan. The military also confirmed that one US service member remains missing.
According to CENTCOM, four injured soldiers were taken to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment and were later discharged. Other personnel who sustained minor injuries were examined and have since returned to duty.
The command added that the identities of the two deceased soldiers will be released 24 hours after their families have been formally notified.
A day earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had targeted the Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan with missiles and drones.
The IRGC claimed the attack destroyed two fighter jets, three US aircraft, and struck fighter jet shelters and the parking ramp at the base. These claims have not been independently verified.
Russian media also reported that US personnel had not been evacuated from the base before the attack.
