WASHINGTON: Two U.S. service members were killed and dozens of others wounded in a series of Iranian missile and drone attacks on American military facilities in Jordan over the past five days, according to The New York Times, citing U.S. officials.
The report said the repeated attacks indicate that Iran continues to possess a significant missile arsenal and has improved its ability to penetrate U.S. air defense systems.
According to U.S. officials cited by the newspaper, the first attack struck a residential building at King Faisal Air Base, injuring at least five U.S. personnel.
A second strike reportedly targeted a military installation in eastern Jordan where UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters were stationed, causing damage to several helicopters.
Another missile attack hit Muwaffaq Salti Air Base (Azraq), where around 20 U.S. troops sheltering in bunkers were injured, although no fatalities were reported in that incident.
Officials said the same base came under attack again on Friday, resulting in the deaths of two U.S. service members and injuries to four others. Several personnel sustained minor injuries and later returned to duty after medical evaluation.
Earlier, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that two American service members were killed and several others wounded while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan on July 17. CENTCOM also stated that one U.S. service member remains missing.
Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) previously claimed responsibility for targeting the Al-Azraq Air Base in Jordan with missiles and drones. The IRGC alleged that the attack destroyed two fighter jets, three U.S. aircraft, as well as aircraft shelters and parking ramps.
The claims regarding damage to military assets have not been independently verified, and U.S. authorities have not publicly confirmed the extent of the damage described by the IRGC.
