MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rejected media reports suggesting that India’s third One-Day International against England at Lord’s will be Rohit Sharma’s final international ODI.
According to Indian media, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia strongly denied the speculation, stating that the board has held no discussions whatsoever regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
“There has been no conversation within the BCCI about Rohit Sharma retiring,” Saikia said, adding that the reports claiming the Lord’s ODI would be the veteran opener’s farewell match were incorrect.
He emphasized that Rohit remains an important member of the Indian team and that there has been no decision to end his international career.
The BCCI secretary further stated that Rohit Sharma continues to be a regular part of India’s ODI setup and will keep representing the country for as long as he remains in the team’s plans.
Saikia also urged fans and the media not to pay attention to speculation, noting that the team’s complete focus is currently on the important ODI series against England.
The retirement rumors emerged after several Indian media outlets claimed that the national selectors had begun planning for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup without Rohit Sharma, raising speculation that the third ODI at Lord’s could be his final international appearance.
The speculation intensified following Rohit’s modest performances in the opening two ODIs against England. The Indian captain scored 11 runs in the first match and 26 runs in the second, prompting questions about his form and future in international cricket.
Despite the rumors, the BCCI has made it clear that there has been no official discussion or decision regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement, reaffirming that he remains an integral part of India’s ODI squad.
