WASHINGTON: The United States has announced new measures aimed at weakening the International Criminal Court (ICC), with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying Washington intends to work with its resources and allies against the court.

Speaking on the issue, Rubio said the U.S. government would use the means available to it, in coordination with partner countries, to challenge the ICC.

“We will work with the resources we have and with our allies” to oppose the ICC, Rubio said, according to the reported remarks.

He also stated that the United States would not allow what he described as hostile governments or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to override the U.S. Constitution and the American judicial system.

The comments come amid longstanding U.S. criticism of the ICC’s jurisdiction over certain cases involving U.S. personnel and allies.

The ICC has previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alleging responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Israel rejects the allegations, and the warrants remain part of ongoing international legal proceedings.

The United States is not a party to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC, and successive U.S. administrations have expressed varying degrees of opposition to the court’s jurisdiction in certain matters.

No further details were immediately provided regarding the specific measures the U.S. administration plans to take. The announcement reflects Washington’s continued opposition to the ICC’s actions in cases involving Israel and other issues it considers beyond the court’s legitimate authority.
