Islamabad: Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb has announced that under the government’s new tax reforms, direct interaction between taxpayers and tax officials will be eliminated and replaced with a faceless digital system aimed at improving transparency and reducing corruption.
Speaking during the National Assembly’s budget session, the finance minister said that the government is introducing fundamental reforms in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to modernize the tax administration system.
He stated that in the new framework, the traditional model of face-to-face interaction between tax officers and taxpayers will no longer exist. Instead, a fully digital and automated system will handle assessments and related processes, ensuring greater efficiency and transparency.
According to Muhammad Aurangzeb, the reforms are part of a broader effort to strengthen Pakistan’s economic stability and improve governance in revenue collection. He said that the government is working to simplify tax procedures and build trust between taxpayers and the state through technology-driven solutions.
The minister added that the faceless system will help minimize discretionary powers of tax officials, thereby reducing opportunities for corruption and improving fairness in tax assessments.
He also acknowledged criticism regarding the performance of the FBR, stating that constructive criticism is welcome and helps improve institutional performance. He said that reforms in the tax system are ongoing and aimed at making it more efficient, transparent, and taxpayer-friendly.
During his speech, the finance minister also highlighted improvements in the broader economy. He said that Pakistan has achieved macroeconomic stability, with positive indicators in several sectors. He noted that industrial activity remains steady, the current account has moved into surplus, and the export sector is showing improvement.
Muhammad Aurangzeb further stated that IT exports have increased by around 20 percent, reflecting growing strength in Pakistan’s digital economy. He credited policy consistency and recent reforms for contributing to economic stabilization.
Referring to regional developments, the minister said that efforts by the leadership helped reduce the risk of conflict in the region. He congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and the people of Pakistan for what he described as successfully preventing escalation of tensions.
He said that the direction set in the previous budget by the Prime Minister had helped guide the economy toward stability, resulting in improved financial indicators and investor confidence.
The finance minister emphasized that tax system reforms remain a key priority of the government. He said that modernizing the FBR through digital transformation is essential for increasing revenue collection and ensuring long-term fiscal sustainability.
Experts note that a faceless tax administration system, if implemented effectively, could significantly reduce human discretion in tax processes and improve transparency. However, its success will depend on strong digital infrastructure, data integration, and public trust in automated systems.
The government has been working on broader digitization of financial and administrative processes, and the introduction of a faceless system is seen as a major step in that direction.
