ISLAMABAD: Senior security sources have claimed that the movement launched in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) under the banner of public rights gradually revealed objectives beyond its original demands, adding that authorities had been aware of the background and agenda of certain groups involved from the outset.

Speaking to journalists, senior security officials said that India had failed to achieve its objectives in Indian-administered Kashmir through military means and was now allegedly attempting to create instability in Azad Kashmir. According to the officials, intelligence assessments had long indicated the direction and objectives of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), and authorities were monitoring developments closely.

The officials emphasized the deep connection between Pakistan and Kashmir, noting that Kashmir holds a special place in the country’s national identity. They pointed out that a significant number of personnel serving in Pakistan’s armed forces belong to Kashmir and reiterated that Pakistan’s dispute is with what they described as a “terrorist regime,” not with the people of Kashmir.

Security sources stated that the movement initially began as a campaign focused on public rights and economic issues. However, they argued that it took time for the broader intentions behind some elements of the movement to become visible. They maintained that dialogue and engagement have always been the state’s preferred approach in dealing with political and social grievances.

According to the officials, the Azad Kashmir government has encouraged businesses and markets to remain open, while some protest groups have allegedly established checkpoints and attempted to enforce shutdowns. Security sources claimed that certain activists had threatened shopkeepers with consequences if they reopened their businesses.

The officials further said that the AJK government had continued to follow a political process in addressing public concerns. However, they alleged that anti-state slogans were being raised during some demonstrations and that certain elements were attempting to exploit public grievances for political purposes.

Security sources stressed that the state was responding with restraint and patience. One official remarked that the state first acts like a “mother” through dialogue and understanding before taking stricter measures when necessary. They added that authorities believe the intentions of some groups are becoming increasingly apparent and that any unlawful activities would be addressed through constitutional and legal mechanisms.

Discussing the broader regional situation, the officials said that India had invested considerable political and financial resources in Indian-administered Kashmir but had not succeeded in changing the sentiments of the local Muslim population. They argued that despite restrictions on freedom of movement and expression in the region, pro-Pakistan sentiments among many Kashmiris remain visible.

The security sources also highlighted Pakistan’s broader internal and external security challenges. They noted that the country continues to face threats from terrorism while simultaneously adapting to a rapidly changing security environment shaped by modern technology and cyber capabilities.

According to the officials, these evolving challenges require significant resources, yet Pakistan continues to operate with comparatively limited defense spending when measured against regional rivals. They said both military and political leadership are aware of these realities and are working to address emerging security needs.

The officials also discussed the security situation in Balochistan, alleging that banned militant organizations, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), receive support from influential tribal figures who oppose investment and development projects in the province. They argued that such groups seek to hinder economic progress and create instability.

Touching on foreign relations, security sources described Pakistan’s ties with the United Arab Emirates as strong and brotherly. They also referenced Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy, claiming that the country had played an important part in efforts aimed at reducing tensions and promoting peace in the Muslim world.

Regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, the officials reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position that India cannot unilaterally suspend or alter the agreement. They stressed that Pakistan remains committed to protecting its national interests and would continue to pursue all legal and diplomatic avenues to safeguard its water rights.

The remarks come amid continuing political activity and demonstrations in Azad Kashmir, where debates over governance, economic issues, and political rights have remained prominent. Security officials maintain that while peaceful political expression is respected, any actions deemed unconstitutional or harmful to public order will be handled through legal and institutional frameworks.

The situation continues to be closely monitored by both civil and security authorities as efforts continue to maintain stability while addressing public concerns through dialogue and democratic processes.
