JOHANNESBURG: At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured after armed attackers opened fire in an informal settlement near Johannesburg, South African police confirmed.
According to local media reports, the incident occurred late at night when a group of more than 10 armed men stormed the settlement and began shooting indiscriminately.
Attack in Informal Settlement
Police said the attack took place in an informal settlement on the outskirts of Johannesburg, where residents were targeted during the nighttime assault.
Among the deceased were three women, officials confirmed.
Injured Shifted to Hospital
Nine people sustained injuries in the firing incident and were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The condition of some of the injured remains serious, according to local reports.

Authorities said the motive behind the attack is currently unknown.
