ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to increase the quarterly payment under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to Rs18,000 from the upcoming fiscal year, according to BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid.
The announcement comes as part of efforts to strengthen social protection measures and provide greater financial support to low-income families across Pakistan.
Increase in Financial Assistance
Speaking about the programme, Senator Rubina Khalid said that BISP plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable households and helping beneficiaries maintain dignity and economic independence.
She stated that the decision to raise the quarterly stipend to Rs18,000 reflects the government’s commitment to assisting deserving families amid economic challenges and rising living costs.
The revised payment structure is expected to take effect in the next fiscal year.
Shift to Digital Wallet Payments
The BISP chairperson also announced a major change in the programme’s payment system.
According to her, all BISP payments will be made exclusively through digital wallets starting in July.
The move is intended to improve transparency, enhance efficiency, reduce delays, and ensure that financial assistance reaches beneficiaries more securely.
Officials believe that digital payment mechanisms will help minimize irregularities and provide recipients with easier access to their funds.
Criticism of Negative Campaigns
Senator Rubina Khalid criticized what she described as negative propaganda against the Benazir Income Support Programme.
She said the programme has become an important source of economic support for millions of low-income households and continues to contribute to poverty alleviation efforts throughout the country.
According to her, attempts to undermine public confidence in the programme are regrettable given its role in supporting some of Pakistan’s most vulnerable citizens.
Importance of BISP
The Benazir Income Support Programme is one of Pakistan’s largest social safety-net initiatives and provides financial assistance to eligible families through regular cash transfers.
Over the years, the programme has expanded its coverage and incorporated technology-based systems to improve beneficiary registration, verification, and payment processes.
The planned increase in payments and transition to digital wallets are expected to be among the most significant changes to the programme in the coming fiscal year.
Further Details Expected
Authorities are expected to release additional information regarding the implementation of the revised stipend amount and the digital wallet system in the coming weeks.
Beneficiaries may be provided with guidance on registration procedures, payment access, and the transition from existing disbursement methods to the new digital framework.
The increase in the quarterly stipend is likely to be welcomed by millions of beneficiaries who rely on the programme for financial support and household expenses.
