Lahore: The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has announced a new safety initiative under which QR-based panic buttons will be installed in public transport vehicles, including buses, vans, rickshaws, and taxis.
According to the spokesperson, the system is designed to improve passenger safety and enable quick emergency response in case of any incident.
What Is the QR Panic Button System?
The QR panic button will be a digital safety feature linked to the Punjab Safe City platform. Each vehicle will have a unique QR code that passengers can scan using a smartphone.
The feature will be available through the Public Safety App and the Safe City web portal, free of cost.
How It Will Work
Once installed, the system will function in the following way:
1. QR Code Scanning
Passengers will scan the QR code placed inside the vehicle before or during travel.
2. Access to Vehicle Details
After scanning, users will be able to view:
- Vehicle registration details
- Driver information
- Vehicle owner data
3. Panic Alert Feature
The system will include a panic button option that allows passengers to:
- Send an emergency alert
- Share live location
- Notify authorities instantly
4. Police Response System
Once an alert is triggered, the information will be forwarded to the Safe City command center, which can coordinate an immediate police response.
Passenger Safety and Information Sharing
Officials said passengers will also be able to share their trip details with family members, improving safety during travel.
This feature is aimed at increasing transparency in public transport and reducing risks related to harassment, crime, or emergencies.
Official Statements
A Punjab Safe Cities Authority spokesperson said the system includes:
- Call and emergency alert options
- Real-time location sharing
- Vehicle verification tools
- Direct linkage to police response units
Inspector General of Punjab Police reiterated that protecting citizens’ lives and property remains the department’s top priority.

Objective of the Initiative
The QR panic button system is part of Punjab’s broader effort to modernize public safety infrastructure. Authorities believe it will:
- Improve passenger confidence in public transport
