Karachi: The Sindh government has officially appointed Barrister Ghulam Shabbir Shah as the new Prosecutor General of Sindh, according to a notification issued by the provincial Law Department.
The appointment fills a key legal position in the province that had remained vacant following the elevation of the previous Prosecutor General, Justice Faiz Shah, to the Sindh High Court.
Official Notification Issued
The Sindh Law Department released a formal notification confirming the appointment of Barrister Ghulam Shabbir Shah as Prosecutor General. With the issuance of the notification, he will assume responsibility for overseeing prosecution matters on behalf of the provincial government.
The Prosecutor General serves as the head of the prosecution service in the province and plays a crucial role in criminal justice proceedings, legal advice, and coordination between prosecutors and law enforcement agencies.
Son of Provincial Minister Nasir Hussain Shah
Barrister Ghulam Shabbir Shah is the son of Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and a prominent member of the provincial cabinet.
His appointment has drawn public attention due to his family connection with a serving provincial minister. However, the government has formally announced the appointment through the prescribed legal process.
Vacancy Created After High Court Appointment
The office of Prosecutor General became vacant after Faiz Shah was appointed as a judge of the Sindh High Court.
Following that appointment, Additional Prosecutor General Muntazir Mehdi had been serving as the acting Prosecutor General of Sindh, carrying out the responsibilities of the office on an interim basis.
With Barrister Ghulam Shabbir Shah’s appointment, the position has now been filled on a permanent basis.
Role of the Prosecutor General
The Prosecutor General is one of the most important legal officers in the provincial justice system. The office is responsible for:
- Supervising criminal prosecutions across the province.
- Providing legal guidance to prosecutors.
- Representing the provincial government in significant criminal matters.
- Coordinating with police, investigative agencies, and courts.
- Ensuring that prosecutions are conducted in accordance with the law and constitutional requirements.
The position is considered critical for the effective functioning of the criminal justice system and for maintaining professional standards within the prosecution service.
Expectations from the New Appointee
Legal observers note that the new Prosecutor General will face a range of challenges, including improving prosecution performance, reducing delays in criminal cases, and strengthening coordination between prosecutors and investigative agencies.
Sindh’s prosecution service handles thousands of criminal cases each year, making the office a central pillar of the province’s legal framework.
The appointment of Barrister Ghulam Shabbir Shah comes at a time when judicial reforms, case backlogs, and improvements in conviction rates remain important issues within Pakistan’s justice sector.
