Islamabad: A recent meeting between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has sparked widespread political speculation, with informed sources claiming the discussions went beyond security matters and also focused on easing political tensions and improving access to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

According to sources familiar with the development, the meeting took place on the 14th of this month at Barrister Gohar’s residence in Islamabad. While some official statements described the interaction as primarily related to terrorism and security concerns, insiders claim that political issues formed a significant part of the discussions.

Sources stated that Barrister Gohar’s residence has previously served as a venue for sensitive high-level contacts and informal communication between PTI representatives and relevant authorities. The latest meeting, they said, was part of ongoing behind-the-scenes efforts aimed at reducing confrontation and creating space for broader political understanding.

Although worsening security conditions and terrorism-related issues were reportedly discussed, insiders claim the central focus remained matters concerning PTI founder Imran Khan. Discussions allegedly included improving visitation arrangements for Imran Khan’s family members and party leaders currently facing restrictions regarding jail meetings.

One source reportedly remarked that if the meeting had been solely about security concerns, “neither the venue nor the participants would have been the same.”

According to individuals familiar with the talks, PTI representatives expressed concerns that continued restrictions on meetings with Imran Khan could further increase political tensions in the country. Medical facilities and other humanitarian concerns related to the former premier were also reportedly raised during the conversation.

Sources added that officials also outlined certain “red lines” and conveyed institutional concerns regarding PTI’s political approach and future conduct. The discussions were described as an attempt to build mutual understanding rather than exert pressure on any side.

Importantly, insiders rejected the impression that the meeting took place under coercion or pressure. According to one source, neither Mohsin Naqvi nor the PTI representatives were forced into the talks, and the purpose was simply to improve communication and lower the political temperature.

Political observers say such backchannel contacts are not unusual during periods of heightened political tension. Analysts believe informal dialogue often plays a role in reducing misunderstandings, opening communication channels, and preventing further escalation between political actors and state institutions.

The sources further claimed that the broader objective of the engagement was to address concerns on both sides — including institutional reservations as well as PTI’s demands regarding Imran Khan, his family members, and party leadership — in hopes of avoiding further confrontation.

Meanwhile, the matter gained additional attention after comments made on social media by Aleema Khan, sister of Imran Khan. According to the sources, her public remarks regarding the meeting negatively affected ongoing reconciliation efforts behind the scenes.

One insider reportedly claimed that the controversy generated after Aleema Khan’s statement may have harmed the possibility under consideration of allowing Imran Khan’s sisters to meet him in jail.

The development highlights the continuing political uncertainty in Pakistan, where tensions between PTI leadership, the government, and state institutions remain a major issue in national politics.

Neither the federal government nor PTI officially confirmed many of the details attributed to unnamed sources. However, the reports have intensified debate regarding possible behind-the-scenes negotiations aimed at reducing political confrontation in the country.

Analysts believe that if communication channels remain open, there may still be opportunities for political de-escalation, though public disagreements and mistrust continue to complicate efforts toward reconciliation.
